Finding Relief
When you’re in pain, it’s more then just physical, it invades your life, making every movement a challenge—whether you’re lifting your child, hunched over a computer, or simply going for a run—being suddenly interrupted by a sharp, relentless pain or even that nagging pain that doesn’t seem to let up. Simply put, it’s a struggle.
Obviously, pain can manifest in various areas of the body, and we can work with all them, but neck and back pain are among the most common complaints we see here in the clinic. The beauty of acupuncture lies in its ability to address pain wherever it is. Unlike many treatments that focus solely on the symptoms, acupuncture dives deeper, treating the root cause of discomfort by restoring balance within the body’s energy pathways.
Acupuncture’s effectiveness isn’t just anecdotal—it’s backed by research. In a study conducted at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Oakland, California, 640 participants with chronic low back pain experienced significant relief after a handful of acupuncture treatments. Another large-scale study in Germany found that acupuncture not only reduced pain intensity in patients with chronic back pain but also improved their overall quality of life. The study was so convincing that acupuncture is now covered by health insurance in Germany.
It’s not uncommon for patients to suffer from pain in multiple areas at the same time— perhaps lower back pain on one side and neck or upper back pain on the other. When one area is in distress, the body often compensates, leading to pain elsewhere. Fortunately, acupuncture is designed to treat several areas simultaneously, providing comprehensive relief that other treatments may not offer.
When it comes to managing musculoskeletal pain, one of the most common questions is, “How many treatments will I need?” The answer varies depending on the individual, the severity, and the nature of the pain. Most patients notice a difference after just one session, but the real work lies in retraining the body to maintain this newfound balance.
Take, for example, three patients with back pain. Patient A has been dealing with chronic lower back pain for years, aggravated by running. Patient B recently injured her neck during a workout, and the pain has persisted for a few weeks. Patient C has recurring neck pain that comes and goes, typically flaring up during stressful periods. While Patient B might only need one or two treatments, Patients A and C will require more, with Patient C incorporating ongoing monthly maintenance to keep stress down and prevent a flare up. Of course the final outcome depends on how their bodies respond to the treatment.
Acupuncture doesn’t just treat pain—it promotes overall well-being. While addressing your pain, acupuncture also works on other levels, reducing inflammation, calming the nervous system, balancing hormones, improving circulation and also balancing any emotional ups and downs associated with the pain.
