From climate crises, a global pandemic to unrest in many parts of the world, the emotional and spiritual distress that many grapple with is a part of our daily existence. Although Acupuncturists are not therapists, the recurring theme of addressing emotional pain has become a primary focus in our approach to patient care. As a practitioner who additionally specializes in the interconnection of the mind, body and spirit I see cases from pain to stress management to just those wanting to hit bigger lifts in the gym, but one thread weaves through them all – there’s always an emotional component to our growth and healing. Emotional pain extends beyond the mind, impacting both our bodies and spirits. Chinese medicine uniquely addresses this triad—body, mind, spirit—recognizing that feelings are not confined to the mind but manifest physically as sensations. In our current world, inundated with perpetual wars, political unrest, economic instability, and personal ups and downs, the need for support during times of stress becomes crucial. Emotions and Chinese Medicine The practice of Chinese medicine has become quite mainstream over the last decade or so, but people still find it illusive and mysterious. And in some regard, it is. For example, the way we look at emotions in Chinese medicine is quite unique. Before we jump into how emotions are interconnected with the body, let’s reveal some basics. Traditional Chinese medicine has actually been around for over 3,000 years. The medicine is comprised of acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, cupping, moxibustion, Chinese nutrition and Tai Qi. The goal of all these modalities is to achieve balance in the body by way of manipulating Qi, blood, Yin and Yang. When there is balance in the body, we feel healthy, symptom-free, our mind is kind, our digestion is easy, our sleep is deep and rejuvenating, energy is bright and radiant and our body feels solid, grounded and flexible. Most people think that Chinese medicine is only effective in treating pain, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. While it’s true, acupuncture and herbal medicine are incredible at bringing down inflammation and healing pain, the medicine is actually an incredible asset to every single system in the body. One area where this medicine is very different from Western medicine is around emotional wellness. Chinese medicine believes that each organ, will not only give way to physical symptoms when out of balance, but emotional symptoms as well. Let’s take the Liver for example. When the Liver is out of balance, meaning it’s not in harmony or perhaps there’s some stagnation or stuck energy, it will create symptoms or warning signals. With an imbalance, one might experience tension in the upper back and shoulders, headache, migraines, waking up between 1AM-3 AM, constipation, IBS, menstrual cramps, PMS to name a few. The emotions that the Liver rules are anger, frustration and depression and those too will come to the surface more easily when there’s an internal imbalance. Now, how do organs get out of balance? Many things can cause this and nothing too surprising; too little sleep, too much alcohol, too much fried or rich food, too much work, too much stress. And being in a particular emotion much of the time can also create physical symptoms. For example, a body that is deeply rooted in sadness and grief might start to further that imbalance by becoming asthmatic, thereby making it even harder to move through or past that emotion. Here’s a list of organs and their associated difficult emotion, but also the virtue or antidote that can rebalance it. Tips to Balance Emotions in Chinese Medicine What emotion do you gravitate towards when things are challenging? Do you tend towards being angry, sad or are you a worry wart when times are tough? Listed below are emotions, the organ system that rules that emotion, other symptoms that MAY occur when that organ system is out of balance and some tips to get things back into balance. Anger and Depression: Liver Migraines, PMS, menstrual discomfort, high blood pressure, dizziness, insomnia (mostly trouble staying asleep), pain in the ribs, red eyes, constipation, acne. Milk Thistle, fish oil, apple cider vinegar, watercress, onions, vinegar, lemon, honey. Avoid: Alcohol and nicotine Tip: Take a martial arts or kickboxing class to move the angry out, don’t simmer in it! Worry: Spleen Low energy, paleness, fibromyalgia like muscle pain or weak muscles, flatulence, bloating, bowel issues, (mostly soft or loose stools, but can be constipation), poor appetite, Astralagus Tea, ginger, rye, amaranth, corn, millet, pumpkin, chamomile, pau d’arco Avoid: Overeating, gluten and too much raw, cold food Tip: Let go! Dance! Sadness and Grief: Lungs Shallow breathing, chronic cough, phlegm in the throat, lowered immune system, allergies, asthma, skin diseases, urination issues. Astralagus Tea, garlic, pears, banana, licorice root. Tip: Singing is wonderful for the Lungs! Fear and Anxiety: Kidney Sore and weak low back, frequent urination, premature ejaculation, ringing in the ears, constipation, nightsweats, chronic dry throat, Gou Qi Zi Berries or Wolfberries, lamb, squash, sweet potatoes. Tip: Meditation can ground you back to your Kidneys and add some healthy fire to your spirit.
